As a writer, I derive the energy to write from the wellspring of ideas brought forth from the foundation of my daily reality. It has served me well as the driving force of my creativity. Most of the time, I bounce along grabbing the urge to write when it comes, waiting impatiently when it doesn’t. I fill the writing void with binge-watching shows, visiting with my kids over Facetime, and keeping apace of current events. In other words, living as if I’m not a writer in the middle of a novel that I have no clue right now how to complete. What has happened is that reality has gotten too real. I’m not only distracted from finishing my novel, I want to escape reality. It’s hard to fathom that we as a country would hand over our democracy to Elon Musk and Peter Thiel, two tech billionaires. Musk bought trump and Thiel owns Vance.
What’s ironic is that the storyline of my new work explores the notion of the multiverse as an accessible reality for most humans. We can enter and exit these alternate realities through our own abilities. At first frightening for Olivia, the MC, however, once she sees how she can use these alternate realities for her own spiritual growth, she becomes an advocate for all humans to exercise their innate powers. Escaping the hazards of climate change and saving the human race can be accomplished by just going somewhere else where it hasn’t happened or hasn’t happened yet. That’s what I would love to do now. Leave this reality of being in the middle of the climate crisis of out-of-control fires, extinction-level hurricanes, and desert-making droughts. Along with this impending doom for humans, we have ushered in an unfit president and government that is an impending doom for our democracy as it becomes an oligarchy modeled after Russia.
Just like my MC Olivia, I want to jump into alternate worlds. Go to a world where decent humans who respect law and order and respect their fellow man become leaders. Where humans understand the causes of climate change and respond to the dangers before it’s too late. A universe where I finish my book and it becomes a best seller. Well…that hope has been around for a while now.
If only.
