Is this real life or a sci-fi movie?

Stumbling out of bed, I sleepily go into the kitchen to get the kitties their breakfast. The sun was bright and the thick backyard grass visible through my lanai was a lush green. A bird was chirping loudly. A peaceful scene. A quiet Sunday morn. Turning on the espresso maker for two shots with foamy milk. Love my lattes. Sat down in my favorite chair still looking outside through my wall of glass, kitties satisfied napping in the sun. Grabbed my iPad and read yahoo news. Wham! We are living in the Sci-Fi movie called The Virus That Ate America.

We are now up to 6000 cases from under 2000, was it just last week? European countries are shutting down all restaurants and nonessential businesses, and even borders. We’ve blocked travel from Europeans to the US and now from the UK and Ireland. Americans are rushing home and making airport customs a nightmare petri dish of people. Schools are shut for as much as 8 weeks. There’s been a run on toilet paper and fresh vegetables.

We are at the edge of a panic. We must stay away from each other. Everything has become virtual overnight. Homeschooling online, college courses online, doctor visits online. Groceries, meals, clothing all delivered to our doors. Prisoners from touching and socializing face to face. Facetiming with family, replaces hugs.

A bad situation was made worse by an incompetent president. A narcissist who is more worried about reelection than this pandemic from a virus that started in China and has made its way around the globe like lightning. Highly contagious, the sci-fi strangeness is that symptoms are quite broad. You can feel nothing, no sickness but be a carrier. Feel like you have a bad flu, or become so ill you can’t breathe with complications from pneumonia and die.

How can we deal with this uncertainty? We can’t. There is panic, there is depression, and there is remaining in denial, like our WH. The corrupt mendacity of this unfit president has as his motivations for refusing testing kits from WHO: 1. his reelection because it would look bad if there were too many cases here after he called the virus fears a hoax 2. his financial interest in a lab company, and 3. the Kushner family owning a company that could make these kits.

Right now we can mitigate this carnage brought on by this carnival barker, game show host president by voting him out on Nov to save ourselves and this planet and also we can  relax and read a good book. I happen to have three that I can recommend. Walking with Elephants a lighthearted tale about the serious work/family issues women face today, Sunspots, a love story of loss and redemption, and When a Stranger Comes… a Faustian tale about greed in modern society. All are award-winning books that you will enjoy.

I hope I can finish my last works in a two book series because I am in a high risk group for succumbing from this virus should I get it. Let’s hope the sequel to this movie is called After the Virus Came a New World of Hope and Love.

Something might be changing–bigtime

As I watch the Democrats primary process, I’m sensing that a moment in history might be upon us. Are we witnessing a quiet revolution? I’ve had enough of the same old thing,  going on? We are suffering under the worst president in living memory. A man who is losing his faculties right before our eyes but who is at the same time becoming more despotic and moving our government toward dictatorship. A mad king, if you will, supported by greedy power hungry mobsters. Against this push toward autocracy and authoritarianism we have the Dems and their message of inclusion, equality, justice, and a healthcare system that is available to us all.

Chief among them pushing this message is Bernie Sanders who has been pushing this same message his entire adult life. But now people are really listening. The masses seem to really want this change. Civilized countries usually have followed the U.S.’s lead but in this ideology, we are woefully behind. In other countries a catastrophic illness will not bankrupt you, universities are mostly tuition free, the cost of living is doable, and they are still democracies.

The MSM is afraid of Bernie. Why? They like to tell everyone how he went to the Soviet Union for his honeymoon, how he has said positive things about Castro, that his political ideology is really Communism not Democratic Socialism. Why are they lying? We all know for a fact that trump glorifies Putin, Kim Jong-Un, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey, among other dictators. Is trump  really a Commie? Why don’t the MSM harp on that? Trump is dismantling whatever healthcare system we have remaining from the ACA. He wants to take way protections for pre-existing conditions. He has destroyed our intelligence community, our judiciary, our economy with soaring deficits, our alliances. He has destroyed all our government agencies so that the EPA pushes to help the oil companies and to dirty our drinking water, destroyed our State Department, and the CDC so that if the coronavirus hits the US we are understaffed to do much. He has deconstructed the administrative state that Bannon wanted him to do. He alone remains to fix it, but he is woeful ill-equipped mentally to do so. Will he a create a Gestapo to help him? To arrest his foes?

But there is Bernie with a groundswell of people rallying behind him saying. Hell NO! We want our country back. We want to be able to go to the hospital and not come out broke, we want a higher education and not come out broke. The way is was when I, an old woman now, was growing up. Medicare for all is a great idea but we didn’t invent it. It’s the way things have been in Europe and Great Britain for decades. You can be a bartender in London and have healthcare just for living there.

I think Americans are tired of living in this elitist society. Where money talks, where having money is the goal, where greed is the motivation for all things. I hope and pray that this election throws out the evil despot destroying out democracy and is replaced by sanity, equality, and unity, and above all else a healthcare system that works for everyone.

GO DEMS!!!

The good, the bad, and the ugly

Sometimes it’s important to take stock. To count the blessings in life and also recognize the not so good. Hopefully the good will outnumber the other. I know it seems trite but at my advanced age, I feel grateful for my adult children’s accomplishments. It warms my heart to see them be adoring and nurturing parents, having successful careers, taking care of themselves and most of all, I enjoy being with them.  Love hanging out with them. Just came back from a few days in L.A. where I kissed and hugged my grandkids and laughed with my son and his wife. Beautiful inside and out. Had a great Christmas with my daughter who has an amazingly beautiful soprano voice and sings with the Frankfurt opera. We are planning a special mother/daughter trip this June to Dubrovnik. Already bought my first class seat to Frankfurt–lucky me. My eldest son is an accomplished lobbyist who does GOOD things in the aerospace and native American niches–quite diverse clientele and interesting. His extremely bright and beautiful teenage daughter–my granddaughter is growing up too fast. And my eldest daughter and her accomplishments being in demand in the workforce and having a loving husband and brilliant son–my grandson. I also am grateful for my reasonably good health–knock wood.

But intertwined with my good fortune is the insidiousness of the divided country we find ourselves living in right now. I have to admit that I am part of the problem. I am the bad and ugly, in this case, and have no ability to see the other side. I believe in fairness, in affordable healthcare and know firsthand how frightening it is when an insurance company denies coverage because they say your condition is pre-existing. I don’t want to live under the threat of cutting Soc. Security and Medicare. I remember when abortion was illegal and women died getting one, banning abortion will not stop it. I remain horrified as to how we are treating asylum seekers and putting these children in cages and ripping them from their parents. This has shades of Nazi Germany to me. Giving the wealthy tax cuts and cutting food stamps for the poor. I can’t understand why and how there are people who support a WH with a strong allegiance to Russia, where lying is an everyday occurrence, bullying and threatening commonplace behavior by all who serve, where numerous nude lesbian porn photos of FLOTUS flood the internet. I look forward to a day when we once again can be proud to be an American, proud of our president, comfortable with our differences and not be filled with hatred.

I hope it’s soon.

Strange times

Here we are once again finishing our annual trip around the sun. What have we learned on this journey? Unfortunately, not much. We still haven’t tried to tackle CO2 emissions even though scientists have given us dire warnings of imminent doom. We still allow crazy people to get their hands on guns and perform mass shootings. Our government looks like it will remain corrupt with a career criminal as president and the Republican party bankrolled by Russia and doing its bidding. In my long life, I have never seen our government being beholden to Russia. Russia used to be our arch enemy. I believe it still is but Putin is now rejoicing on how its propaganda machine and payouts to GOP legislators is working so well here to destroy our Democracy.

It looks like the United Kingdom will leave the EU causing all kinds of havoc as collateral damage, NATO is no longer strong, N. Korea is getting rambunctious, and the UN is anti-Semitic. The Israeli government is taking a page from our government and is corrupt in its chosen leader and its government is dissolving.

Bottom line the world is a mess.

I have hope though because without hope what is there? I have hope that good will conquer evil, that humans will figure out a way to slow down climate change and CO2 emissions before earth becomes uninhabitable, that countries will not blow each other off the face of the earth.

I have hope.
