I know we’ve had unsettling times in our history. Global wars and the Civil War. The McCarthy years were awful when lives were ruined if a person was suspected of being a Communist. McCarthy and Rep. Comer seem like ideological buddies. Make up shit and crucify people over it to feel powerful. It’s amazing how much damage can be done by one person in our so-called democracy. But now the person out of control is our unchecked president who oversees a party of yes-men eunuchs.
I wasn’t alive during those trying periods but this horror we are going through now seems worse than all of them I believe. Because there are really people who are going along with our move toward a dictatorship. Nobody is stopping the demented madmen. And that just reveals how inept is our Constitution to prevent this. When like minded oligarchs control all the levers of government apparently, there is nothing we can do. When the Supreme Court ignores the balance of power and the House and Senate are on the take, we are helpless to stop this.
My only sense of peace for myself is that I’m 78 and lived in this country when it was truly great. Ok, except for Nixon. I worry about future generations because with drilling in the Arctic starting the earth will not support human life, so maybe the dictatorship won’t last too long. Also, the universe may have sent an alien spaceship to save us or kill us. We will know in a matter of days.
